GAVIN
GRENVILLE-WOOD
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT MENTOR
Â
Gavin Grenville-Wood is widely recognised as one of the leading figures in junior golf development, with a career spanning more than three decades dedicated to growing the game through youth participation, coach education, and scalable academy systems. His influence extends across the UK, the United States, and global coaching networks, where he has helped shape how junior golf is taught, structured, and delivered.
Â
Early career & professional foundations
Grenville-Wood began his journey in golf immediately after leaving school, committing early to a career in coaching. He qualified as a PGA Professional in 1997 and quickly established himself not just as an instructor, but as a developer of coaching environments and programmes. Â
Throughout his early career, he combined hands-on coaching with leadership roles, managing golf academies and building structured pathways for player development. His approach consistently centred on participation, retention, and long-term engagement rather than purely technical instruction.
International experience & academy leadership
A defining phase of his career came in 2002 when he moved to the United States, spending six years coaching at Palmetto Dunes Resort. This led to a prestigious role as Director of Golf at the University of South Carolina, where he further refined his understanding of player development systems and high-performance environments. Â
Grenville-Wood’s international experience helped shape a holistic coaching philosophy—blending American academy structures with grassroots participation models more common in the UK.
Record-breaking junior development at Oak Park
On returning to the UK, Grenville-Wood became Academy Manager at Oak Park Golf Club (2008–2013), where he delivered one of the most successful junior golf programmes in the country.
- Up to 400 children per week engaged in coaching sessions
- Established one of the UK’s most vibrant junior golf ecosystems
- Created a strong “family club” culture to retain players long-term Â
His philosophy was simple but powerful: junior golf should be fun, social, and inclusive, ensuring that children—and their families—stay connected to the sport over time.
This period also produced tangible player outcomes, including juniors progressing into competitive golf and even club championship success at unusually young ages. Â
Innovator in coaching systems & technology
Beyond traditional coaching, Grenville-Wood has been an innovator in how coaching is delivered and scaled. In 2013, he co-founded a technology business focused on providing web and mobile tools for coaches and players, helping modernise communication, programme delivery, and player tracking. Â
This work reflects a broader theme in his career:
building systems that enable coaches to grow participation and operate sustainable businesses.
Global role with Leadbetter & junior education
Grenville-Wood currently serves as Head of Junior Education for Golfzon Leadbetter, one of the most recognised global coaching brands. Â
In this role, he has:
- Led the development of the Leadbetter Kids programme
- Designed coach education frameworks used worldwide
- Mentored coaches across multiple continents
- Helped create certification pathways focused specifically on junior coaching
The Leadbetter Kids initiative reflects his core belief that coaching children requires a distinct skill set, combining communication, engagement, and long-term development planning. Â
Coaching philosophy & methodology
Grenville-Wood’s coaching philosophy is centred on child-first, learner-focused development. Rather than imposing rigid technical models, his approach prioritises:
- Engagement and enjoyment as the foundation of learning
- Age-appropriate skill development
- Building confidence and social connection
- Creating environments that encourage lifelong participation
He emphasises that the real challenge in junior golf is not attracting children—but keeping them engaged for years, ultimately creating both future players and future coaches. Â
Industry influence & coach education
A major component of Grenville-Wood’s impact lies in coach education. As a PGA Fellow Coach—a prestigious recognition of his contribution to the profession—he has trained and mentored coaches globally. Â
His work includes:
- Delivering international coaching seminars and conferences
- Contributing to global coaching curricula
- Supporting the professional development of junior coaches
- Advocating for junior coaching as a viable and rewarding career path
He has also contributed to large-scale initiatives such as the World’s Biggest Golf Lesson, engaging tens of thousands of participants worldwide and promoting accessibility in the sport. Â
Broader impact & legacy
Grenville-Wood’s influence extends beyond individual players to the ecosystem of golf development itself. His career has been defined by:
- Growing junior participation at scale
- Creating sustainable coaching businesses
- Bridging grassroots and elite pathways
- Promoting inclusivity and accessibility in golf
He has also been recognised within the coaching industry, including nominations for national coaching awards, highlighting his contribution to coach development and community impact. Â
Â
Gavin Grenville-Wood stands as a key architect of modern junior golf development. Where many coaches focus on technique, his legacy is rooted in systems, environments, and people—helping thousands of young players enter and stay in the game, while equipping coaches with the tools to do the same.
His work continues to shape the future of golf by reinforcing a central principle:
the long-term health of the sport depends on how effectively we inspire and develop its youngest players.
